Description
Leon Danchin (French, 1887-1938) was a sculptor and artist known for his drawings of animals, primarily sporting dogs. This Danchin etching features a Brussels Griffon dog fascinated by a butterfly. Both are incredibly realistic and detailed, hand signed by the artist, and presented in a wood frame with a wide wood fillet setting off the image. It is unusual to find art framed with such a wide fillet, and the naturalistic wood look is beautiful. The engraving is under glass, with dust jacket and wire on the reverse side, ready to hang and enjoy. This is a numbered piece, which appears to be number 283 of 500 (tiny and hard to read). Also noted at the top, Copyright 1931 by La Gravure Francaise 41 rue St. Georges, Paris.Overall framed size is 18 1/4" wide by 21" tall. The image size inside the etching lines is about 11" wide by 14 1/2" tall. The image has some toning. It also has 3 areas near the top to note: one a tiny white dot with a brown center; to the right of it a small light mark; and in the top right corner another, slightly L shaped light mark. In the lower right quadrant are some irregularities in the surface, which might be from the artwork being laid down, but since we have not removed it from the frame we cannot disclose whether it is laid down or not. This quadrant is not particularly noticeable unless the lighting is right, but it is fair to disclose it. Otherwise the frame is in good vintage condition. There is also a double label on the reverse side, stating "Bruxelle and Butterfly by Leon Danchin".
