Air conditioning and heating systems use a step-down transformers to supply a low-voltage power source for the control circuit.
The high voltage supply power source (120V or 240V) is converted to a 24V power supply for the thermostat, fan relays, heat relays, contactor on the outside unit, gas valve and circuit boards.
Standard heating and air conditioning replacement transformers have multiple primary-voltage taps. This makes it possible to use the same transformer in equipment with different primary voltages (120V or 240V).
Many Air conditioning systems use a smaller type transformer with 20VA (Volt-Ampere). We recommend to use the much stronger 40VA transformer to be on the safe side!
