This Bauer rose bowl was hand-thrown by Fred Johnson who worked at Bauer from 1934 to 1950, when he retired. Prior to working for Bauer in Los Angeles, he was a potter for Niloak Pottery in Arkansas. He was particularly known for his work on the HI-FIRE Line produced by Bauer from 1938-1950. Most of his work is unmarked and, as such, is recognizable by its bright, hi-gloss glazes and distinctive shapes. The bottoms are always glazed.
This rose bowl measures about 4-1/8" tall and has a diameter of about 5". The interior clearly shows the circular lines of hand-thrown pottery
(see photo)
. The color is unusual, a rust or cinnamon color. It is similar to the red-brown color that is available in the HI-FIRE line, but it is less red and more brown. If you look at the 4 pictures from different sides of the bowl, you will notice that the glaze has a mottled, uneven distribution of color which is why I am calling it rare
(see photos)
. I have found no other examples with similar glaze. The bowl is in very good condition with no visible cracks, chips, nicks, or scratches. The white streaks in the photos are light reflections.
Please review photos and ask any questions before bidding; I will be happy to answer them.
