    Description

This is a Child's ABC Alphabet Plate "Girl taking Apple from Lady's Basket" made by Edge Malkin & Co Staffordshire 1850.  It is a rare smaller size - 5-1/8" with the letters of the alphabet press molded around the rim and a twisted rope border.  The plate shows yellow toning throughout with age spots and a chip (bottom rim) on the backside.
It is transfer printed from an early copperplate engraving and depicts a portrait of a little girl taking an apple from a lady's basket.  It is marked with the partial backstamp of Edge Malkin & Co. (see last picture - very hard to capture) in the Staffordshire region of England in the mid 19th century.
Plates like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit and used to aid in children's education and moral training.
