    Description

    On offer is a 1789 Switzerland - Principality of Neuchatel 1/2 Batzen billon (silver-copper alloy) coin in estimated Extremely Fine condition. The Krause catalog designation is KM-47. The coin is approximately 23mm in diameter.
    Nominally this is considered a Swiss coin, but the Principality of Neuchatel did not join the Swiss Confederation until 1857. At the time of this coin's issue the Principality was ruled by Frederick William II in personal union with Prussia.
    The obverse displays an interesting coat of arms that combines the Hohenzollern Eagle with the arms of Neuchatel. The legend inscription alludes to Prussian rule: F-G-BOR-REX (Fredericus Gulielmus Borussorum Rex, "Frederick William King of Prussia").
    The reverse displays the traditional Swiss Cross pattern with the date (1789) and inscription SUUM CVIQUE ("To Each His Own") in the legend. It was the motto of the Order of the Black Eagle, a Prussian chivalric order founded in 1701.
    The SUUM CVIQUE variant (as opposed to the more common SUUM CUIQUE) represents only 8% of the series mintage according to Numista.
