Here we have a very rare coin. 1620 1/2 thaler from Switzerland, St. Gallen. Obverse depicts a bear walking left. A desirable design, these bear coins from St Gallen are commonly found in the 1 thaler denomination, but rarely in the 1/2 thaler size. NGC price guide lists this coin at a 00 valuation in XF. This coin is graded AU53 by ANACS. Slight wiping behind the bear, otherwise has lustre. Areas of weakness in center on both obverse and reverse, but details are strong. We could find only 2 examples which come close to this in grade which sold, according to acsearch. Sincona AG auction 6 (2012), lot 3292 sold for roughly 0 including buyers fee (would grade VF) and Sincona AG auction 44 (2017), lot 5780 (called good very fine with a scratch) sold for around 5 including buyers fee. The most recent sale was an example, grading fine, which sold in a Hess Divo sale for around 0 including buyers fee. This coin is AU!!! This is quite possibly the finest known of the type!!!
